DVD Decluttering Part I

We love movies! We love movies more than most TV shows! My husband took a movie class back in the day and loves to look at the deeper meanings of a movie, all of the symbols and metaphors. We had so many movies. They are all displayed in our living room and sometimes we watch the same few movies over and over again. Some movies I we haven't revisited since we purchased them.

I finally have moved my decluttering journey to our movie collection. I knew this would be a little difficult because my husband is very attached to most of his movies. I am really proud of him because he did get rid of a lot and was willing to not have all of his movies displayed.

Here is our before photo:

Not pictured is two Trader Joe bags of DVDs that my husband filled a couple of months ago. I was determined to clear two shelves full, but I only accomplished one ): We will need to purchase a new DVD disc container to store more of them.

I decluttered my CDs a few months ago (I wish I would have documented that journey!). I had two cases full of CDs.

Not only did I have my CDs in these two storage cases, I also kept every single plastic case for each of them in drawers (why?!?!?!). I got rid of all the plastic cases except for my favorite bands and I narrowed my CD collection down to one CD storage case. I decided to fill as many DVDs as I could with the one that was now bare.

Going through this collection was interesting because we had a lot of duplicates.

For example, why (other than the fact that I am really cool) do I have two copies of The Phantom of the Opera?!

The other duplicates we had because my husband and I combined our collection from before we were married. We had double copies of:
Nacho Libre
Nine
The Forty Year Old Virgin
Knocked Up
Superbad
Avatar
Zombieland
Twilight-both my copies, not my own haha

WE HAVE THREE COPIES OF THE DARK KNIGHT (we love Batman in this family).
I decided to gift my oldest daughter some of those copies (all except The Forty Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Superbad). I also gave her a copy of The Phantom of the Opera. She's a teen now, but these are movies we watch together over and over. We quote Nacho Libre at least once a week ("Get that corn out of my face!") We listen to The Phantom of the Opera soundtrack FOR FUN. Nine was the theme for her six year old birthday party. I know she values these movies so that's why I decided to gift these to her.

There was one movie I've had for years that I've tried to watch but just couldn't get into.
I like movies that make you overthink, but I just never finished this one. I think the last time I attempted to watch it was seven years ago. I came to accept that I will never watch this movie, so it needs to go.

I asked my husband which DVDs he wants displayed and he picked his favorites and got rid of a few (so proud of him). After filling the case we have, I had to display the rest that we decided to keep until we purchase another.

I was thinking that I was being smart and would sell the DVDs for some cash (I purged some books last summer, sold some and received some cash for them). I went to two different sites, but the minimum price to sell all the DVDs listed had to be $15 on one site, $20 on the other. Of course I didn't make it to those prices. I then found the F.Y.E. website. I thought, they should be trustworthy, there used to be a store in the mall I think. After scanning 50 DVD codes, we were given an estimate of $21. BUT, they will only reimburse for up to $5 of shipping fees. I KNOW it will cost way more than that to ship. I think there is still an F.Y.E store in town we can try and sell them to, but it just may not even be worth the time! I am annoyed that I spend so much time scanning to three different sites as it is. Sometimes the money is just not worth it!

Box of DVDs to be given away
So here is what our DVD collection looks like for now:

Though it is a huge improvement from before, I would still like to put more DVDs in another container. I also need to declutter some of the decor we have on the top shelf now (I moved them from another area I was clearing out).
Hoping to post part II very soon and to be more happy with the outcome!

Decluttering-Getting Rid of Facebook

I have a month left of maternity leave. To say that I'm overwhelmed is an understatement. I've spent the last year decluttering my house. I recently realized that I need to declutter my social media as well. I don't have a Twitter or Instagram. I only recently got a Snap Chat. I joined a decluttering group about a month ago. At first it was very helpful. I was glad to find other people who were on the same journey as I. I noticed a few shared blogs of their journeys. I thought that was a fantastic idea and shared three posts of my own. It was then announced that posting your own blog wouldn't be allowed. I panicked. I felt like I was in trouble, that I did something wrong. I am in a state right now where I am struggling postpartum so what some may have seen as not a big deal, was a big deal to me. I apologized for sharing my blog, trying to explain that my own posts would be too long so that's why I shared it. But I continued to panic, and with fight or flight, I...

Kitchen Decluttering

It's so important to take before pictures! I recently decluttered my kitchen a bit more, but I wish I had a picture to compare how far I've come. My counters used to be cluttered with so much stuff. There was a pile of paper always by the sink and the wifi was also located there. It was all such a mess! There was hardly any free counter space and it always looked so sloppy! I took some pictures of what my kitchen currently looks like, but I wish I had more before pictures so I can remind myself that our kitchen is so much more pleasing to the eye now than it used to be! If you are starting a minimalism journey and you want to watch your progress, I suggest taking pictures! Decluttering is like losing weight; you reach a point where you feel like you can't see a difference, but you know you have been working so hard to change. Then you see an old photo and realize how far you've come. This has been how I feel with decluttering. I feel like there is still so much jun...

Teachers: Enjoy Your Parental Leave

This time last year, I was planning for every day that I would be on maternity leave. My due date was August 25, so I would only be with my kids for two weeks before I would be gone. I worked tirelessly, uploading lessons to  tes.com , so all the substitute would have to do was hit "play" on the slideshows. I got copies made, planned on speaking with my substitute weekly (which I did), and thought I would also connect with the students somehow if I read their journals and wrote them back, along with their personal narrative essays. I was going to take only two months off so that it would be like I was never absent. I ended up not going back . Prior to all of this, I asked other teachers what they did while on leave. Almost all said that they provided lesson plans and graded EVERYTHING while on leave. I also heard a horrifying story of a teacher mom who was getting phone calls while her baby was in NICU because the substitute couldn't find a binder with copies that...
